Travel the Rum River - Lake Mille Lacs Style

The Rum River includes wild, scenic, and recreational segments—bringing diverse challenges for those with varying canoe and kayak skill levels. Water levels are usually just right for paddling the Rum, even featuring Class I to Class II rapids throughout the summer to keep you on your toes.

As you paddle your kayak or canoe, you’ll explore the ever-twisting river shoreline, abundant waterfowl, and wildlife, and immerse yourself in the seldom-seen side of Lake Mille Lacs. Since it passes through Mille Lacs Kathio State Park and the Rum River State Forest, camping is another option to explore on your kayak or canoe adventure.

You can also enjoy smallmouth bass fishing along the river and northern pike near the headwaters as you relax and fish from your kayak or canoe. And don’t worry, even if you don’t have your own, you will find kayak and canoe rentals located conveniently nearby.

You’ll also enjoy the Rum River’s scenic landscape, abundant wildlife, and glimpses of its rich history. Burial mounds, ricing pits, copper tools, and other artifacts have been found throughout the area, dating back more than 3,000 years!
